RENOVA® (tretinoin emollient cream) 0.05% is the first prescription cream proven to reduce fine facial wrinkles and lines, fade brown spots and smooth surface roughness when used as part of a total skin care and sun protection program.
RENOVA contains the same active ingredient as RETIN-A® (tretinoin). Called tretinoin, it is a vitamin A derivative like the one naturally occurring in your body. But while
RETIN-A is formulated for acne-prone skin, RENOVA is a rich emollient cream developed specifically for treating fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots and surface roughness. RENOVA, marketed by Ortho Dermatological, costs patients approximately $10 to $15 per month.
Unlike over-the-counter wrinkle creams which simply exfoliate the surface layer of skin, RENOVA is believed to work on all layers of the skin, including the epidermis, where pigmentary changes occur
and even the deeper portions of the skin where fine wrinkling is thought to begin. Medical research has shown in published articles that RENOVA increases collagen. Researchers believe this is one way that RENOVA reduces the signs of aging.
Patients who respond to RENOVA will begin to notice their skin becoming smoother and softer within the first month or two. Within two to three months, brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles begin to
fade. Maximum benefits should be apparent within five to six months of therapy.
More than 300 patients between the ages of 30 and 50 participated in the pivotal clinical studies of RENOVA, which were conducted at eight research centers nationwide. In the studies, patients received
treatment with RENOVA or a placebo, in conjunction with a total skin care and sun protection program. At the end of 24 weeks, physicians noted some signs of skin improvement in 78 percent of patients treated with RENOVA.
While using RENOVA, patients may experience some redness, itching, dryness, or flaking. This is most often mild, and most common when treatment is started. When using RENOVA, as with any other
anti-aging or skin-care product, patients should limit exposure to the sun and always use a sunscreen.
Like other prescription medications, RENOVA has been tested for safety and effectiveness. While it will not repair sun damaged skin, eliminate wrinkles, or reverse the aging process, it is proven toreduce wrinkles, fade brown spots and smooth surface roughness.
RENOVA has been proven effective in clinical trials lasting 48 weeks in Caucasians 30 to 50 years old.
RENOVA is a dermal irritant, and the results of continued irritation for greater than 48 weeks are not known, safety and effectiveness in individuals over 50 or in those with moderately or heavily
pigmented skin have not been established.
