Drug Importation

The following is an abbreviated list which attempts to summarise the policies held by each country regarding the importation of medicines for personal use. In general most countries have a policy which allows the importation of up to 3 months medication as long as it is for personal use. Please check the importation policy of your individual country. The list does not cover specific drugs and should not be considered conclusive in all circumstances and for all drugs

Country Notes
Albania Medicines for personal use are admitted provided the addressee has a medical certificate. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Algeria Import of medicine requires prior approval from the ministry of Public Health and subject to the visa of the Central Algerian Pharmacy. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Angola Patent medicines are admitted only under permit issued by the Angola Department of Health. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Argentina Import of medicine is permitted provided it is for personal use and of non-commercial nature. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Armenia Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorised by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Aruba Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Australia Import of medicine for personal use if subject to the permission of the Australian Director-General of Health. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Austria Medicines intended for personal use are permitted only under an import license. Product should be shipped consigned to a pharmacy. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Azerbaijan Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorised by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Bahamas Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Bahrain Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Bangladesh Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Barbados Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Belgium Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Prohibited items: Melatonin, Viagra shipments to private individuals intended for personal use do not require import license provided value does not exceed 15,000 Belgian francs (approximately US$430.00)
Belize Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Bolivia The Bolivian health authorities must approve medicines. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Brazil Medicines must be accompanied by a prescription from the attendant Brazilian doctor. This prescription should be on a chemist's form, bearing the name, private address or office of the doctor, his registration number with the Brazil National Medical Council and a Portuguese translation of the instructions, as necessary.
Brunei Darussalam A license must be obtained from the Director of Medical Services for the importation of medicines.
Bulgaria The Bulgarian Ministry of Health must approve medicines.
Cambodia Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Cameroon Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Canada Drugs and medicines must comply with Canadian law. Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply or 100 count. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Cape Verde Subject to approval of the Ministry of Health.
Central African Republic Medical or pharmaceutical products may only be addressed to licensed pharmacists.
Chile Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Substantial Duty may apply.
China Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Value of each shipment must not be more than RMB 100 yuan and total value received by each family in one year must not exceed RMB 800 yuan. Medicines will continue to be admitted up to RMB 40 yuan.
Colombia Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Substantial Duty may apply.
Comoros Import for medical reason is OK.
Congo (Brazzaville), Republic of the Medicines can only be addressed to licensed pharmacists.
Congo, Democratic Republic of the Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Medicines require the authorization of the medical authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Corsica Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Limit shipments to 1-month supply of medication only.
Costa Rica Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Limit 3 month's supply for prescription drugs.
Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) Import of medicine for personal use is OK. Limit 3 month's supply for prescription drugs.
Cyprus Import of medicine for personal use is subject to the approval of the health ministry. Limit 3 month's supply for prescription drugs.
Denmark Import license from local health ministry is required. Product should be shipped consigned to a pharmacy. Pharmacists and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in amounts costing less than 100 Danish kroner without obtaining a license.
Ecuador Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Egypt Import Permit issued in advance by the Egyptian Health Ministry is required for import of medicine. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
El Salvador Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Eritrea Import of medicines requires authorization of the Ministry of Public Health. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Estonia Narcotics and psychotropics are prohibited. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Fiji Islands Import of medicine for personal use is subject to the approval of the health ministry. Limit 3 month's supply for prescription drugs.
France Import of medicine for personal use is subject to approval of the Ministry of Health. Limit shipments to 1-month supply of medication only. Medicines are subject to an import license issued by the Central Pharmaceutical Service of the Ministry of Health
Germany Import license from local health ministry is required. Importation of medicines requires special authorization by German authorities. Product should be shipped consigned to a pharmacy. Hospital pharmacies can import medicines in small amounts without obtaining an import license.
Great Britain (England) Import of medicine for personal use is subject to the approval of the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Greece Medicines must be packaged in the manufacturer¹s container bearing distinctive marks. Medicines must be licensed or specially authorized by the Greek authorities. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Greenland Import license from local health ministry is required. Product should be shipped consigned to a pharmacy. pharmacists and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in amounts costing less than 100 Danish kroner
Guatemala Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Substantial Duty may apply.

Honduras Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Hong Kong Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Iceland Medicines are subject to approval of health ministry. All medicines must be accompanied by invoice stating price. The addressee is required to present the invoice with other documents in order to effect customs clearance of the parcel. Pharmacists, hospitals and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in small amounts without obtaining a license.
India Medicines are subject to approval of health ministry. No license is required if medicine is for personal use and does not exceed 100 rupees in value. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Substantial Duty may apply (30% or more)
Ireland Import of medicine for personal use is subject to the approval of the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Israel Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Substantial Duty may apply. Pharmacists, hospitals and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in small amounts without obtaining a license.
Italy Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Liquids may not be shipped. Pharmacists, hospitals and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in small amounts without obtaining a license.
Jamaica Medicines must have the name and formula printed in English on the container and wrapper. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Japan Prescription drugs should be no more than 1-2 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Import permits are not required for medicines intended for personal use and in quantities such that they could not be used for commercial purposes. Contraceptives should be limited to one-month supply per shipment. Shipment of Viagra to female recipient is prohibited. Shipment of female hormones to male recipient is subject to approval of Japanese customs.
Jordan Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Kazakhstan Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorized by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Kenya Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Kuwait Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Medicines and pills must be accompanied by a medical prescription or documents indicating their specifications or compositions. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Kyrgyzstan Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorized by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Laos Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Latvia Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Lebanon Medicines are admitted only under permit from the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Liechtenstein Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Luxembourg Import of medicine is subject to approval of the Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Malawi Medicines must be plainly marked with the composition and dosage. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Malaysia Medicines are subject to approval of the Ministry of Health Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Maldives Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Mali Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Martinique Import of medicine for personal use (non-commercial in nature) is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Mexico Medicines are admitted only by prior approval of the Department of Public Health in Mexico.
Moldova Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorized by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Mongolia Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Netherlands Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Nicaragua Medicines or secret remedies of unknown composition that are not registered in Nicaragua and whose formulas have not been made public are prohibited. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Nigeria Import of medicines requires a license. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Paraguay Medicines require a permit from the Ministry of Public Health. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Peru Contraceptives are prohibited. Commercial Invoice not required if value is less than US$200.00. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Philippines Medicines are subject to approval of the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Poland Import of medicine for personal use is subject to approval of the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Portugal Medicines require the authorization of the Director General of health of Portugal. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Pharmacists, hospitals and Labs recognized by the state can import medicines in small amounts without obtaining a license.
Romania Medicines intended for personal use do not require import permit, provided quantity is limited to one piece of each item. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Russia Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorized by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Rwanda Medicines are admitted provided the addressee ahs a permit issued by the Chief Pharmacist in Rwanda. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Saudi Arabia Medicines are not admissible, unless accompanied by a medical prescription issued by a competent authority. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Senegal Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Serbia-Montenegro Medicines must be accompanied by a medical prescription or by an attestation from a medical institution justifying the need to use such article. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Seychelles Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Slovak Republic Medicines are admitted provided the addressee is in possession of an import permit granted by the Slovak Republic health authorities. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Somalia Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
South Africa Medicines are subject to the approval of the health ministry. Import license is not required id value is less than R 200 (Rand). Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Taiwan No license in required provided it is being imported for personal use and the value is less than US$1,000.00.

Togo Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Tunisia Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Pharmacies and physicians can import small amounts of medicines for clinical use without a permit. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Banned items: Aspirin, sulpha drugs and vitamin compounds.
Turkmenistan Medicines and vitamins are admitted as authorized by the Bureau for Registration of Medicines and Pharmaceuticals. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Turks and Caicos Islands Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
U.A.E. Import of medicines requires prior authorization and approval of the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Uganda Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Ukraine Medicines are prohibited unless a permit from health ministry is obtained before shipment is made. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Uruguay Medicines are subject to approval by the health ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.

Vatican City Import of prescription drugs is subject to approval of Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item. Liquids may not be shipped.
Venezuela Medicines must be authorized by the Minister of Health, Agriculture and Boviculture of Venezuela. Import of medicine for personal use is OK provided recipient has prescription. Copy of prescription should accompany shipment. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Vietnam Medicines being shipped as a gift with value of less than US$200.00 do not require an import permit. Such parcels must be marked "Gift-Export License Not Required" Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Yemen Medicines are subject to approval of the Health Ministry. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Zambia Medicines must be clearly marked as to their nature or composition in English on the label. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
Zimbabwe Medicines must be labeled with the name, formula, and composition in English. Prescription drugs should be no more than 3 months' supply. Non-prescription drugs should be limited to 5 pieces of each item.
